The inspiration for the Vitra armchair La Chaise came from Charles and Ray Eames' sculpture "Floating Figure" by the sculptor Gaston Lachaise. The designer couple Eames designed the extravagant armchair for a competition of the Museum of Modern Art New York, where the sculpture is also located. With La Chaise, the Eames created one of their most unconventional designs, in which, unlike most of their designs, the focus is not on functionality. Rather, it is a seat sculpture that stands out from the Eames design repertoire due to its exciting aesthetics.
