The Barcelona Series was designed by the famous German architect and designer Ludwig Mies van der Rohe in 1929 for the Barcelona International Exhibition held in Barcelona, Spain. The sofa was specially designed for the King and Queen of Spain to sit on during the exhibition, and therefore its design was inspired by royal armchairs. With its design, Mies van der Rohe challenged the heavy and ornate furniture concept of the period, reflecting the "less is more" philosophy of modern architecture. This sofa has become one of the cornerstones of modern furniture design and is still used in prestigious spaces today.
